Help with a sony d-303

Hrllo mr Kaosun, I have a D-303 that can play only if it is vertical from the right (it does not play in any other direction so no spindle motor problem). I read in other forums about de-soldering and soldering the 4 lens holder. Is that what I have to do? Thanks a lot, please respond!

It seems like an aging laser lens but I suggest you replacing the spindle motor at first. For every D303, there's a spindle motor issue that the motor needs to be replaced. If an aging lens, it should read disc as long as the player is placed vertically either left or right. Motor issue will bring skipping tracks during playing.

Hello mr kaosun and thanks for the reply! I have replaced the spindle motor with a verified one, so the motor is defenately not the problem. Also the player plays only vertically from right direction not on the left! I know that this is probably a lens issue but i've read in an other forum of you (about a non sony player) that the problem occurs because the 4 lens steel strings are aging. Can this be the problem? I have also posted a thread about a d-t66 that I am trying to repair, please take a look at it! Thanks a lot for your help!

I also checked the sled motor, works perfect! I will transfer the d-t66 thread on "various issues"

You'll replace the whole laser assembly instead of correcting the strings. You cannot guarantee the quality if you correct the strings; however, replacing the whole laser costs not too much.

Mr kaosun thanks a lot for your help! I replaced the optical pick up, now the machine works perfect! An other small problem about this unit is that when I received it (as for parts or not working) the previous owner had fried it. some diodes and transistors had been replaced and the discman now works with all power sources fine but the optical out light is not emitting. I suppose the high voltage fried the light? is that a correct assumption or the problem is deeper inside the unit? Checked 9v to 5v regulator (optical power supply) ok. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

You can download the service manual from here and check the fiber circuit. Usually the fiber LED has no power supply.

Thanks so much for your help! I tested an optical LED from an other 303 and it worked perfect, so I only need a new LED. Thanks a lot!

Hello again Mr Kaosun, my d-303's spindle motor is starting to have problems when flat. Can you please tell me where do you buy these spindle motors? I can't send the unit to you because I am living far away from US and the shipping is too high. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

We ordered all RF410 motor from TOSHIBA JAPAN. I guess you cannot get a retail motor from them. Try lubricating the spindle motor, it might help.
