SONY D-50

Hi Moderator and forum-followers.
I am a man from The Netherlands, love all (early) Sony products and have more than 250 collector items, ranging from transistorradio's walkietalkies, clocks (also mechanical from sony), walkmans, CD players etc.
Recently i obtained two D-50 cd players, and have issues with BOTH of them.
After connecting power (original wallward 9VDC with correct polarization) the players will start and play, but as soon as i press any button, it will reset and stop, and wont poweron unless waiting for a couple of minutes. I am happy it plays, but i cannot select numbers or pauze/play... :'(
Any clue's what might be the fault ?
Thanks in advance for reply

It's amazing of you for having so many collections!
For your issue of D50, I have to say it's rare.
You'd better check CPU power supply and key panel assembly.
Or, open back cover, find the main flexible cable and find the "PB" "FF" "REV" pins, use a wire to short corresponding functions (with ground) to see whether it works as you expected. If yes, panel issue. If not, check CPU part. If you're using an unqualified power adapter, you can replace it for a try. It's also possible for the DC-DC module inside of the player if it couldn't output enough current when key is pressed.

Hi Kaosun,
Thanks for your quick reply :)
I have tried 2 CPU's : Sony wallward adapters AC-96NES (9VDC 600ma) and (the original ?) AC-230A (9VDC 800ma). both with the same effect on both D-50's (one with a black on/off switch and one with the green one).
I have removed the metal botton from one of them, but am afraid to proceed. with all the wiresets it seems so fragile, and I am not very confident how to "flip up"the PCB.
Do you have any tips ?

Regards,
Harm

If you remove the panel flexible cable, you'll see this.
Find the PB (playback) and all other keys for test.

Hi Kaosun,
thanks again, but I am not shure, how to flip the PC from rear ? and wich cables are short or long.
When i remove the flatcable (connector) will i be able to do this without tools (eg by hand) or must I desolder ? to test, I can clearyl see stop, ff, fr etc. bu do i test it connecting them to neg/screw or else on the PCB.
I am bit scared to perform this without knowledge up front of what to expect/encounter :o

Find the ground, it's a hole on the left side of the stop. The first line (count from left to right) is stop. Connecting it with ground by a wire (no soldering is needed, just connect them)to test keys one by one.

great thanks, one more question. if I remove the backcover, wich way I have to flip up the PCB ? do I have to remove wires or connectors first ? (i am bit afraid since the connections look so fragile)

Remove the back cover and keep the LCD screen facing to you.
