I bought a completely dead P21 and managed to get it working again. After recap and cleaning, it came back to life. Everything was fine except for the FCs, which weren't moving. I disassembled the pickup, cleaned what needed to be done, and that helped. It read the TOC and played quite well; I tested it on several discs. I went to the adjustments, TE, FE, eye-pattern looked quite nice. I had a little over 0.7Vp-p from the CDR, so I decided to increase the laser power a bit. I adjusted the VR by less than 0.5mm, and after that, unfortunately, something died. Of course, I returned to the default VR setting, but that didn't help. The LD beam is there, but very weak compared to what it was before. Additionally, the current draw increases to 1.1A during focusing, which is far too high. I checked the VR and it's OK, I also checked what happens when I lower the laser power and at that point the power consumption also drops to relatively normal values. Does this mean that LD has ended its life? Anything else I can check?
Thanks. |
